Summary
Recent multibeam swath bathymetry has revealed that the submarine extension of the Aeolian Islands is significantly larger than previously understood, extending far beyond their visible landmasses. This discovery provides critical insights into the evolution of volcanism in the region, the influence of structural lineaments, and the location of large-scale flank instability events, as well as evidence of recent submarine eruptive activity. The study presents updated bathymetric maps for the western, central, and eastern sectors of the archipelago, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the submarine landscape. These findings are accessible online or on a DVD included with the printed book.
