Continuous archaeological research and restoration at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Olympia have revealed a material reality that differs significantly from early expectations, particularly regarding ancient sculpture. The study highlights how the site's fame, preserved through translations of ancient texts like Pausanias and the 19th-century revival of the Olympic Games, led to high anticipations that were not fully met by the excavated remains. Since excavations began in 1875 under the German Archaeological Institute, Olympia has emerged as an independent source for understanding its past, offering a nuanced perspective on both ancient and modern perceptions.
