Summary

Researchers have identified a new species of leaf-nosed bat, Hipposideros, from Vietnam, significantly smaller than its relatives within the H. armiger complex. This discovery was made through morphological analysis, acoustic characterisation, and mitochondrial DNA sequencing, revealing distinct differences between the new taxon and H. armiger. The species was found sympatrically with H. armiger in Cat Ba National Park, part of Ha Long Bay, as well as in Chu Mom Ray National Park on the mainland. It inhabits both disturbed and primary forests, highlighting its adaptability. This finding expands the diversity of Vietnamese bat fauna and contributes to our understanding of species differentiation within the region.
