Light and Emotional Architecture: An Embodied Experience

A strong correlation exists between architectural elements—such as form, materials, colors, and spatial arrangements—and their emotional impact on human experiences, particularly through the lens of light. This finding emerges from a pilot study conducted at Luis Barragán's House and Studio, where 22 interviews revealed how intentional design affordances shape perceived atmospheres. The research builds on Mathias Goeritz’s concept of 'Emotional Architecture,' suggesting that such designs can foster sustainable development on both individual and societal levels. Employing experiential observation, structured interviews, and qualitative-quantitative documentation, the study bridges phenomenology with architectural science to explore light’s role in shaping emotional responses.
