Summary
The coastal region of Paraty, Brazil, exhibits varying levels of vulnerability to oil spills, with some areas facing severe ecological and socio-economic risks. Research using the Shoreline Sensitivity Index (ISL) identified distinct sensitivity levels: rocky shores in bays and islands (ISL 1-2), beaches like Taquari and Prainha (ISL 4), southern Jabaquara and Barra de Corumbê (ISL 5), talus deposits and armored coasts (ISL 6), and mangrove areas (ISL 10) as the most sensitive. Fieldwork, including morphological and sediment characterization of six beaches, revealed that oil pollution could cause significant damage to marine ecosystems, tourism, and fisheries. This study highlights the need for targeted environmental protection strategies in Paraty's coastal zones.
