Summary

This study describes twenty-two species of monogenetic trematodes, including twenty new species, collected from marine fish gills across the Galápagos Islands and neighboring Pacific regions. Notably, two new genera, Pseudomicrocotyle and Acanthocolpa, were proposed, with the former reclassifying Microcotyle acanthurum. The research also corrected MacCallum's measurements of Protomicrocotyle mirabile and expanded its genus description. Additionally, previously undescribed structures surrounding the genital pore in Acanthocolpa species were identified and named 'giant cells,' highlighting their taxonomic significance. The study underscores the specificity of trematode-host relationships, with each described species found on only one specific host despite examining over 500 fish from approximately 100 species.
