Summary

The Palace of Westminster, designed by Charles Barry following the devastating fire of 1834 that destroyed the old Westminster Palace, stands as a enduring symbol of British democracy and parliamentarian rule. The fire left only four structures intact: Westminster Hall, the Cloisters of St Stephen’s, the undercroft of the Chapel of St Mary, and the Jewel Tower. In response, a commission was formed to organize an architectural competition, which Barry won after reviewing 97 entries. His design for the new Palace of Westminster not only provided functional legislative space but also established a lasting architectural representation of democratic governance in Great Britain.
