Summary
Citizen engagement emerges as a key strategy for sustainable tourism in UNESCO World Heritage Sites near large cities, offering a solution to the negative impacts of over-tourism. A study on Madrid's metropolitan periphery, including Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro, demonstrates that activating local communities can rebalance visitor flows, fostering proximity-based, experiential, and more sustainable tourism. The research employed a dynamic methodological approach combining documentary analysis, network studies, qualitative and quantitative assessments, and participatory processes. Findings highlight the potential of citizen-led initiatives to mitigate urban pressures while promoting economic and social development in peripheral areas. This approach gains added relevance due to the recent UNESCO designation of Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro as World Heritage Sites.
