Summary

Fine root respiration of Siberian fir (Abies sibirica) exhibits statistically significant seasonal and diurnal variation, with intensity peaking in July or August and correlating positively with temperature while negatively with moss layer moisture. This finding highlights the dynamic role of fine roots in carbon balance within bilberry-sphagnum pine forests of the middle taiga. The study employed infrared gas analysis over two vegetation seasons (2016–2018) to measure CO₂ emissions from intact roots in peaty-podzolic-gleyic soil, revealing consistent daily patterns and interannual differences in respiratory activity.
