Summary

A new northern limit for the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), also known as 'oso caballo' in Central America, is proposed to be the Honduran Moskitia region. This conclusion is based on recent biological monitoring and a comprehensive review of historical records, which show no evidence of the species in Guatemala, Belize, or El Salvador for the past 100 years. The study highlights the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve as a critical habitat, where phototraps confirmed the presence of giant anteaters, unlike other regions in Central America. This research refines our understanding of the species' distribution and underscores the importance of the Moskitia region for conservation efforts.
