Summary

A clear relationship between flooding and leptospirosis outbreaks was identified in Medirigiriya, Sri Lanka. The study found that areas affected by floods, particularly Atambaoya, Tissapura, Viharagama, Medirigiriya, and Diulankadawala, were more vulnerable to the disease. Farmers engaging in muddy paddy farming and livestock rearing practices were also identified as high-risk groups due to exposure to contaminated water. The research used retrospective rainfall and flooding data from 2004-2016, leptospirosis case records, and questionnaire surveys, analyzing the data with chi-square tests and ArcGIS 10.3 for map analysis.
