Summary
A new genetic analysis confirms the presence of three white-toothed shrew species (Crocidura spp.) on Vietnam's coastal islands, with Crocidura attenuata recorded for the first time on Cat Ba Island. This finding supports the hypothesis that its distribution is limited to northern and eastern regions near the Red River. Additionally, Crocidura phuquocensis was exclusively found on Phu Quoc Island, while Crocidura fuliginosa was genetically confirmed in Vietnam for the first time from Con Dao Archipelago islands (Con Son and Bai Canh). The study used mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequencing to verify species identifications, providing critical insights into the biodiversity of these UNESCO-listed marine protected areas.
