Summary

The belfry of Vilnius Archcathedral Basilica stands as one of the most significant vertical landmarks and symbols of Vilnius, with its 13th-century origins tied to defensive walls. This structure is notable for its well-preserved brickwork, dating back to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania era, where bells were often cast alongside cannons in weapon foundries. A key finding is the historical significance of the belfry's clock, installed in 1672 and repaired in 1803 under Vilnius clock makers' guild supervision, which became the city's main clock after a town hall collapse. Additionally, six large bells gifted to Vilnius in 2002 by the Archdiocese of Cologne highlight the belfry's enduring cultural importance.
