Summary

Only about half of the once numerous Gorky-related places in Kazan, tied to Maxim Gorky's life and works, survive today. These include landmarks like 'Marusovka,' Staro-Tatarskaya sloboda, and the University and Spiritual Academy, which are preserved despite urban development that has erased others, such as Derenkov’s grocery store and bakery, or Mykolayivska Square. Gorky's written accounts serve as critical documentary evidence, allowing reconstruction of his 'Kazan'—a city immortalized in world literature but largely lost to time. The study traces the evolution of these sites from the 19th to the 21st century, highlighting the fragility of cultural heritage preservation and the enduring power of literary memory.
