Summary

A novel methodology for defining and preserving heritage sites, grounded in visibility analysis, reveals how urban renewal projects can alter the perceptual identity of historic areas. By applying isovist analyses and Space Syntax methods to Sulukule, Istanbul—a neighborhood with significant cultural-historical assets—this study demonstrates that renovation efforts have reshaped visible and known spaces, potentially eroding tangible heritage. The approach links perceptual behavior with built environment data, offering a tool for evaluating which elements should be protected based on visibility criteria. This work provides a framework for heritage planning that balances preservation with spatial analysis.
