Summary
Researchers have documented for the first time the advertisement calls of two Ecuadorian frog species, Pristimantis galdi and Pristimantis katoptroides, within Sangay National Park. P. galdi's call consists of 7 to 9 short notes resembling a hammer striking a nail, with a mean dominant frequency of 2.39 kHz, while P. katoptroides emits a single metallic 'tic' sound at 1.74 kHz. Despite their morphological similarities—both belonging to the spiny green frog ecotype—their calls differ significantly from each other and from another related species, Pristimantis roni. The study underscores the challenges of recording these frogs due to their elusive nature, suggesting that long-term monitoring techniques could enhance our understanding of their acoustic signals in Ecuador's biodiversity-rich rainforests.
