Summary
Dominant agroindustrial systems have employed spatial expulsion processes to seize control over agricultural lands and production means, leading to severe social and environmental consequences. These practices, including land grabbing and monoculture imposition, not only cause suffering in rural communities but also affect urban populations by increasing food dependency and reducing access to adequate nutrition. Additionally, these systems have reshaped urban landscapes through 'commercial urbanism,' favoring large-scale distribution logistics while deteriorating local markets, such as the Mercados de Abastos in Spain. This study examines these phenomena using the Plaza de Abastos in Santiago de Compostela as a case study, analyzing the policies and regulations that facilitate corporate control over food systems.
