Summary

A nationwide lack of knowledge and ownership among Norwegian young adults towards the Rock Art of Alta poses significant challenges for its long-term conservation. This study, conducted through the project 'Verdensarvinger' in 2024, highlights that insufficient engagement with rock art sites among younger generations can hinder their preservation. The research combines findings from this project with experiences gained from 'Den Kulturelle Skolesekken,' an initiative aimed at educating primary school children about heritage and archaeology. To address these issues, the study proposes a concept where children and young adults actively engage with rock art sites, fostering personal connections and interest through exposure and outreach efforts. An interdisciplinary approach to understanding younger generations' relationships with heritage sites is also emphasized as a potential solution to enhance public engagement.
