Summary

A vulnerable primate, the owl-faced monkey (Cercopithecus hamlyni), faces escalating threats to its bamboo habitat in Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda. Despite park-driven incentive programs and community bamboo plantations failing to curb illegal collection, a proposed bamboo value chain offers a practical solution by supporting local cooperatives and optimizing resource dependency. The study underscores the urgent need for collective conservation efforts, highlighting the species' unique ecological role and the risks of local extinction without timely intervention. It also calls for further research into its population ecology and community-driven conservation strategies to ensure long-term survival.
