Summary

From 1994 to 2012, the Butrint Foundation successfully navigated the challenges of conserving Albania's UNESCO World Heritage Site, Butrint, during a period marked by political instability following the fall of communism. The foundation's efforts not only stabilized and preserved the site but also fostered collaboration with local authorities, particularly the Institute of Monuments, and trained Albanian conservators to independently manage the site's upkeep. This case study highlights the importance of international cooperation and capacity building in the long-term conservation of culturally significant sites.
