Summary

By 2020, communities adjacent to Mexico's biosphere reserves (BRs) experienced a shift from high to medium marginalization levels, despite a population decline of up to 28% since 2000. This counterintuitive trend suggests that regulatory restrictions in protected areas may have reshaped demographic dynamics within BR boundaries. The study employed comparative maps for the years 2000, 2010, and 2020, revealing that settlements increased with distance from BRs while population density decreased closer to these protected zones.
