Summary

A three-year study (2008–2010) of high-altitude lakes in Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal—including Gokyo, Imja, and Pyramid Lakes—revealed that while water quality remains generally suitable for drinking according to WHO and Nepal standards, signs of degradation are emerging. Key indicators such as nitrate nitrogen and total phosphorus show increasing trends, suggesting potential impacts from tourism or environmental changes. This research provides a critical baseline dataset for managing these pristine lakes and assessing long-term ecological shifts in one of the world's most iconic World Heritage Sites.
