Summary

A comprehensive inventory of bird species in the National Park of Banc d’Arguin (PNBA), Mauritania, reveals that 53% of the 233 documented species are highly dependent on the park’s coastal and marine ecosystems for their life cycle. This study underscores the PNBA's critical role beyond ornithological significance, highlighting its potential to provide substantial ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling (valued at €1.8 to €133.7 million annually) and bird-watching, while also addressing carcass removal (€2900 to €4800/year). The research, conducted in response to increasing environmental pressures, aims to quantify the socio-economic value of the PNBA to inform its management plan, reinforcing its importance for conservation efforts.
