Summary

Research on the crypts of Moscow's Assumption Cathedral reveals that these structures, discovered during excavations, likely served as disposable burial sites for disturbed medieval cemetery remains. The study proposes that the white stone crypt dates to the 1470s, while the brick crypt is attributed to the mid-19th century, with an intra-temple crypt linked to Prince Yuri Danilovich's burial around the late 1470s. By synthesizing fragmentary historical data and employing typological analysis, this work sheds new light on the origins and dating of these atypical funerary structures, contributing significantly to our understanding of Moscow's earliest cult center.
