Summary

Balancing conservation priorities and local development needs is critical for sustaining living heritage sites, such as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This study highlights the risks when conservation efforts dominate, potentially disrupting social fabric and undermining community well-being—illustrated by Luang Prabang in Lao PDR. Through comparative analysis of Nan (Thailand) and Luang Prabang, researchers used interviews, field surveys, and documentary data to assess living heritage attributes and their evolution over time. The findings underscore the necessity for collaborative stakeholder networks to maintain equilibrium between preservation demands and local development, ensuring the long-term viability of such sites.
