Summary

Research reveals that the lower Cretaceous rocks of the Zhuravlevka terrane, Central Sikhote Alin, were deposited in a virtually nonvolcanic basin along a transform plate boundary. These terrigenous sediments, dating from Berriasian to Albian, originated primarily from eroded granitic-metamorphic rocks and possibly ancient arc roots, indicating a mature continental crust source. The study identifies distinct depositional environments, including shelf, underwater slope, foothill, and adjacent basin plains of an oceanward-open marginal sea. This insight challenges traditional models of sedimentary basin formation in transform settings, offering new perspectives on the geological evolution of the region.
