Summary

Traditional Persian architecture in Yazd serves as a dynamic climate shield, reducing indoor temperatures by up to 15°C through passive cooling strategies. This study reveals that features like windcatchers (fahadan), sabats, courtyards, and domed roofs effectively mitigate urban heat island (UHI) effects without relying on energy-intensive mechanical systems. By analyzing these vernacular techniques—through field investigations, contextual analysis, and comparative studies—the research demonstrates their potential to enhance urban comfort, reduce energy consumption, and promote sustainable built environments. The findings advocate for integrating nature-based solutions into modern urban design to combat climate change and improve liveability.
