Summary
Preliminary research on the eastern necropolis of Remesijana (2018–2020) reveals significant insights into early Christian burial practices and urban development in Sopianae, now part of Pécs. The study identified distinct phases of necropolis use, including early Christian burials alongside earlier Roman-era remains, suggesting continuity and cultural transition. Archaeological excavations employed stratigraphic analysis, artifact dating, and spatial mapping to reconstruct the necropolis's layout and chronology. Findings indicate a shift from pagan to Christian burial rites, with notable variations in grave goods and burial orientations. This research contributes to understanding the religious and social dynamics of late antiquity in the region.
