Summary
Researchers found that the fishing community of Praia Grande, Paraty, Brazil, exhibits mixed resilience traits in its socioecological system. While 59.1% of fishermen diversify their income through tourism and employ multiple fishing technologies—potentially reducing pressure on marine resources—they show low participation in decision-making processes, particularly amid conflicts with conservation units. However, the study highlights a strong capacity for learning, as fishermen recognize human-induced environmental changes and adapt their practices accordingly. This duality suggests that while some attributes foster adaptive resilience, others may exacerbate resource depletion. The findings were derived from semi-structured interviews conducted between 2012 and 2013 with 22 local fishermen, assessing flexibility, organizational capacity, and learning ability as key indicators of resilience.
