Summary

A high-resolution depositional history of the Lake Mungo lunette, part of Australia's Willandra Lakes Regionreveals three distinct late Quaternary phases spanning over 100,000 years. Using sedimentological analysis and 56 single-grain optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) age estimates combined with Bayesian modeling, researchers identified depositional phases >100 ka, ~65–33 ka, and ~30–16 ka. Notably, twelve of thirteen previously dated samples from Bowler et al. (2003) were redated to younger ages, aligning them with independent age controls and this study's findings. This work establishes a refined chronology for the lunette, offering a framework for future consistency in palaeoenvironmental interpretations along its length.
