Summary
A significant collection of archaeological materials from the Quebrada de Humahuaca, previously misrecorded as originating from Calilegua, has been identified within the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) at the Smithsonian Institution. This discovery clarifies that the artifacts were excavated by Karl Schuel between 1920 and 1923 in various sites along the Quebrada de Humahuaca. The study leverages an inventory maintained by Schuel, which matches objects from the NMAI collection, thereby correcting their provenance. Researchers also evaluate the potential of these materials to advance understanding of the late pre-Hispanic history (1000–1600 d.C.) of the region.
