Summary
Mobile device use significantly facilitates mountain hiking experiences by mitigating leisure constraints and enhancing negotiation behaviors. Research involving 399 hikers from Canada's Rocky Mountains (including Banff, Jasper, and provincial parks) and South Korea (Bukhan and Seorak National Parks) demonstrated that mobile devices positively influence hiking participation through reduced constraints and increased motivation. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) revealed cultural differences: Canadian hikers showed a stronger positive relationship between negotiation and participation, while South Korean hikers exhibited a negative impact of constraints on participation. Additionally, an extended UTAUT2 model highlighted safety expectancy as the strongest predictor of mobile device use across cultures. The study confirms that mobile devices play a crucial role in negotiating leisure constraints during mountain hiking.
