Summary

New reconstructions of Younger Dryas ice extent in the south-west English Lake District reveal substantial spatial variation, challenging previous limited and inconsistent models. The study, based on high-resolution geomorphological mapping using aerial photography, Google Earth images, and digital elevation models, identifies key features such as arcuate moraine ridges and flutings that record glacial retreat patterns. It also highlights the prevalence of paraglacial processes in shaping the landscape. By integrating these findings with existing regional data, the research provides a comprehensive framework for understanding late Pleistocene glaciation in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
