Summary
A comprehensive study of the flora within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Copán, Honduras, reveals 94 plant species, with eudicotyledons dominating at 76%, followed by monocotyledons (16%) and basal angiosperms (10%). The Fabaceae family emerged as the most diverse, hosting 10 species. Through nine linear transects of 0.1 km, researchers identified 57 arboreal and shrub species, counting a total of 605 individuals, with Brosimum alicastrum being the most abundant. Notably, two species—Cedrela odorata L. and Swietenia macrophylla—are categorized as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List and listed under Appendix III of CITES. The study underscores the significant potential of these species for medicinal, industrial, and forestry applications, highlighting their ecological and economic importance.
