Summary
A novel discovery of under-the-snow development in Gentiana lutea ssp. symphyandra, a priority species in Bulgaria's biodiversity monitoring system, was documented for the first time. This rare subspecies, found across five mountain ranges and four floristic regions, exhibits unique population structures, vegetation dynamics, and reproductive traits. Researchers analyzed 11 natural populations to assess spatial and age distribution, habitat preferences, and ecological roles within various phytocenoses. The study also provides conservation recommendations to safeguard this vulnerable species, which is listed in Bulgaria's highest priority category for protection.
