Summary

A unique artistic fusion emerges from the late 12th-century Studenica Monastery, challenging traditional Western Christian iconography. The relief composition of the Mission of the Apostles on the west portal of the Virgin's Church reveals a blend of Italian Romanesque and Byzantine influences, notably featuring the 'Roman type' of St. Peter and a 'Latin' variation of the blessing sign—elements previously deemed exclusive to Western art. This study analyzed these deviations from conventional iconography, demonstrating that such variations were not confined to the West but also integrated into Serbian medieval art, offering new insights into cross-cultural artistic exchange during this period.
