Summary
High-altitude Polylepis forests in the Cordillera del Vilcanota (Peru) harbor unique biodiversity, including specialist species and high endemism levels. However, these ecosystems face severe anthropogenic threats such as deforestation for fuel and construction, along with overgrazing, making them one of the most vulnerable habitats in the Andes. A recent study by Servat et al. (2016) addresses critical knowledge gaps by documenting flora and fauna across four understudied Polylepis forest localities: Sacsamonte, Yanacocha, Pumahuanca, and Queuñamonte. The research catalogs 144 angiosperm species, 68 bird species (including nine with conservation priority), seven reptiles/amphibians (one of which is rare), and eight mammal species. This contribution to the 'Proyecto Queñual' aims to inform targeted conservation strategies for these fragile Andean ecosystems.
