Summary

A groundbreaking restoration project of the 17th-century mural paintings at Dragomirna Monastery Church revealed the church's unique artistic and architectural elements. The restoration, funded by the European Union between 2010 and 2012, uncovered extensive gilded surfaces and intricate stone-carved motifs—unprecedented in Moldavian medieval churches—that enhance the iconographic program spanning 22 registers. Using affresco and mezzo fresco techniques, the project adhered to international conservation standards and involved a team of 50 specialists. The restoration highlighted the church's original appearance and its influence from miniature painting techniques. This project won the 2014 EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards in the 'Conservation' category, receiving both the Grand Prix and Public Choice Award.
