Summary

A rare and comprehensive archive of medieval hospital accounts reveals the resilience and structured charitable operations of Chartres Cathedral’s Aumône Notre-Dame, despite the disruptions of the Hundred Years' War. Analyzing 92 financial records spanning 86 years (1333–1499), researchers uncovered detailed insights into the institution's spatial organization, community dynamics, patient care modalities, and funding mechanisms—including patronage, casual revenues, and endowments. This study highlights how the Aumône maintained its charitable mission through adaptive resource management, offering a unprecedented glimpse into medieval healthcare governance linked to one of France’s most significant pilgrimage sites.
