Summary

Old Cairo's historic urban fabric outperforms newer extensions like New Cairo and 6th October City in walkability and bikeability, primarily due to its compact design and highly integrated street network. This study reveals that the older district's sustainable transportation advantages stem from its intricate urban layout, which fosters pedestrian and cyclist movement without relying on car dependency—a growing issue in the region's modern expansions. Researchers used the Walk Score metric and space syntax analysis to quantify these differences, highlighting how urban form directly influences livability. The findings underscore the need for coordinated efforts among local authorities, global organizations, and international agendas to prioritize sustainable mobility solutions in rapidly developing cities like Greater Cairo.
