Summary

Excessive and poorly designed outdoor signage in Old Riga significantly degrades the visual quality of its streetscapes. Research reveals that current signage on building facades not only detracts from the aesthetic coherence of historical monuments but also lowers the overall appeal of public spaces. The study employed spatial preference analysis, street color photomontages, sociological surveys, and regulatory document reviews to assess the impact. Findings underscore the need for design guidelines or a code to standardize outdoor signage, windows, and facades, ensuring a harmonious and high-quality urban environment that preserves Riga's historic character.
