Summary

A novel computer vision sensor, the laser & video-based displacement transducer (LVBDT), has demonstrated remarkable accuracy and robustness in monitoring horizontal movements of slender structures like church spires. Deployed at the south spire of Burgos Cathedral, this low-cost device captured slow, low-frequency displacements over a year, revealing significant correlations between structural movements and meteorological events. The findings highlight its suitability for tracking thermal variations and structural aging processes, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional sensor solutions. This approach holds promise for enhancing the monitoring of heritage sites worldwide.
