Summary

Agricultural landscapes in northern Dalmatia, Croatia, reveal dynamic shifts in land use over millennia despite the persistence of static field structures. Research combining archaeobotanical data with historical records shows a transition from prehistoric cereal agriculture integrated with wild forest resources to commercial-scale arboriculture during the Classical period. This legacy persists today in semi-wild olive groves and traditional farming practices, illustrating how long-term land-use patterns shape Mediterranean agroecological systems.
