Summary

A systematic evolution in geometric constructions underpins the architectural designs of abbeys and cathedrals from the 4th to 15th centuries, with increasing complexity evident from early examples like St Gall and Cologne to later structures such as Durham and Toulouse. This study reveals a strong correlation between proposed geometric systems and authenticated plans, demonstrating that while irregularities exist, they adhere closely to mathematical principles—with groups of compartments combining within 99.65% accuracy. Architectural affinities, such as those between Winchester and Ely or Tewkesbury and Gloucester, are mirrored by their geometric similarities or differences, respectively.
