Summary
In 1537, the relocation of the University of Lisbon to Coimbra marked a pivotal moment for the city, catalyzing profound urban, demographic, social, economic, and cultural transformations. This study reveals that Coimbra's renaissance began under King D. Manuel and intensified post-1537, with significant architectural developments. Notable changes included the opening of Rua da Sofia in 1538, followed by the construction of distinguished houses on its western side. Eastern expansion saw the rise of university colleges from the 1540s onward, including the Colégio de Jesus (1547), Colégio de S. Jerónimo (1565), and Colégio das Artes (1568). The research approach combines historical analysis with urban development studies to elucidate Coimbra's transformation during this period.
