World Heritage List and Cultural Properties in Serbia — The First 50 Years

2023 — Conference paper — WHE3F93DDC77B

Over the past 50 years, Serbia has inscribed five cultural properties on UNESCO's World Heritage List, including two serial sites (Stari Ras and Sopoćani; Medieval Monuments in Kosovo), one transnational and serial site (Stećci - Medieval Tombstones Graveyards), and two individual sites (Studenica Monastery; Gamzigrad-Romuliana). This achievement reflects Serbia's adherence to the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, ratified in 1974 as part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The study highlights Serbia's early engagement with the Convention, its participation in the World Heritage Committee (1977-1980), and the significance of its inscribed properties, which span medieval monuments, religious sites, and archaeological landscapes. The research contextualizes these contributions within global heritage conservation efforts.

The Contribution of Geophysics to the Knowledge of the Hidden Archaeological Heritage of Montenegro

2020 — Article — WHE6A64B26880

Geophysical surveys have uncovered new buried structures at significant archaeological sites in Montenegro, including the Hellenistic-Illyrian site of Mjace, Roman towns like Doclea and Municipium S, the medieval city of Svač, and Stećci medieval tombstone graveyards. This research demonstrates the potential of non-destructive geophysical methods to enhance our understanding of hidden archaeological heritage without causing damage. By identifying and mapping subsurface features, these techniques support preventive archaeology efforts and contribute to the preservation and management of cultural sites. The findings provide an updated perspective on Montenegro's rich archaeological landscape, highlighting its historical significance and the importance of continued exploration and protection.
