Water Regulating in Kenozero Taiga: Excess or Lack of Water and Where Does It Go?

2022 — Article — WHE0E6394ED47

Deforestation in the boreal forests of Lake Kenozero's catchment significantly increases runoff and soil erosion, with hypothetical total forest loss leading to a 71 mm/year rise in runoff and a 2.44 t/ha/year increase in soil erosion. The study quantified water yield regulation due to evapotranspiration (125 mm/year) and water quality assurance through erosion prevention (9.56 t/ha/year), highlighting a tradeoff where deforestation enhances water yield but deteriorates water quality. Using the InVEST model, researchers mapped these ecosystem services, emphasizing the importance of considering precipitation recycling under climate change to inform sustainable forest management strategies.

The lichens and allied fungi of the southern part of the Kenozersky National Park (Arkhangelsk Region, NW Russia)

2021 — Article — WHE0340C0F7C6

A groundbreaking study reveals that the southern part of Kenozersky National Park hosts 263 species and one subspecies of lichens and allied fungi, including several new records for Arkhangelsk Region and Northwest European Russia. Notably, Biatora albidula is documented for the first time in this region, while two species are already listed in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation and seven more warrant consideration due to their rarity. The research employed systematic field surveys and taxonomic analysis, providing critical insights into the biodiversity and conservation status of lichens in this ecologically significant landscape.
