Summary

Rapid immigration and socioeconomic pressures are driving significant changes in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, threatening its tropical forest ecosystem and biodiversity. Despite the reserve's remote location and low population density, agricultural expansion and shifting cultivation, fueled by limited economic alternatives, are accelerating resource degradation. While recent legal and policy reforms may offer long-term benefits, their immediate impact on local practices remains unclear. However, conservation efforts, both locally and internationally, present a glimmer of hope for mitigating biodiversity loss in this critical region.
