Summary
A significant increase in household income for local residents has been observed due to tourism development in Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia. However, the study reveals that local community involvement in tourism activities is hindered by a lack of essential knowledge and skills, as well as the seasonal, part-time, low-paying nature of available jobs. These constraints pose challenges to long-term tourism development. The research, based on 378 questionnaires, highlights the need for strategies to minimize these barriers to sustain tourism growth in the region.
