Summary

A novel hyperspectral method reveals that biological colonization and surface morphological changes are the most prevalent and severe deterioration patterns affecting rock carvings at the Dazu Rock Carvings site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern China. The study combines mineralogical analysis with spectral indices and an intelligent model (WOA-XGBoost) to quantitatively assess deterioration patterns influenced by environmental factors like temperature and humidity. By identifying optimal wavelength combinations and correcting for dynamic spectral responses, researchers achieved precise classification of deterioration types, providing a systematic framework for cultural heritage management. This approach offers a data-driven solution for monitoring and prioritizing conservation efforts in humid regions.
